FORTHCOMING SCOUT RALLY

ON Saturday, May Bth, the first Scout Rally ever to be held in Whakatane takes place in the Showgrounds. A substantial and enthusiastic committee embracing the Citizens and Caledonian troops has been assiduously working over the past month and have now practically completed air the major details. What is a Scout Rally? 6uch a question may well be asked by the average Whakatane resident who has not as yet had the opportunity of con-i tacting the movement to any great extent. The idea be-' hind it, is merely a competitional meeting of all the troops within a given area for the purpose of engaging in friendly rivalry in the exhibition of the main themes of Scoutcraft and training. Thus is the high standard of scouting maintained and thus are: troops kept within friendly range one with t|ie other. 'Visitors to the rally on Saturday week will see a grand march past by some 200 boys, demonstrations of ambulance work, signalling, bridge building, wall scaling, flap jack making (cooking) and a hundred and one of the other activities which goes under the common caption. As Whakatane enjoys the distinction of holding the largest' number of Scouts and Cubs of any town in the Bay of Plenty, it is encumbent upon the residents of town and; county to see to it that the rally is well in keeping with this achievement. The best manner in which this can be attained is by patronising the event, not merely the rally but the campfire programme in the evening and also by attending the special combined service from the Band Ro<tunda in the Domain on Sunday afternoon.
