At the meeting of the Whakatane County Council a special vote of sympathy was passed to the relatives of the late Mr C. R. Goo-ch. Friends of Pte J. 11. Barr, of Whakatane,, will be pleased to note that he was amongst the Prisoners of War exchanged by mutual agreement between the. British and Il ab ian Governments. He arrived in England last week and is apparently fit and well. Amongst the. prisoners of war repatriated from Italy recently under the exchange of personnel arrangement, was another local man in the person of Pte T. Paul, son of Mr and Mrs W. Paul of Poroporo, who was a member of the Maori Battalion.
for Awakeri Sports Two silver cups especially donated through Mr S. W. Burstall by 'Wonder' Products Ltd. for the encouragement of school athletics throughout, this district are now on display in the. window of Whakatane Farmers Supply Co. The cups will he competed for the iirst time at the Awakeri Sports to-morrow. East Coast Railway Unlike 1 the Borough Council the WhakaUtne County Council at its meeting last Tuesday decided to reply to the Chamber of Commerce query regarding the East Coast railway in the affirmative 1 . The council decided that it supported the completion of railway link between Taneatua and Gisborne.
