TWO-DAY SESSION
The No. 2 District Armed Forces Appeal Board held a further sitting : in Whakatane last. Tuesday and Wednesday. A substantial list was dealt With and the Board afforded all cases the same careful hearing it has . in the past. In the main adjourn- .. mcnts were granted, but. it was obvious that a more determined effort - was being made to eliminate all eligible single men now remaining . in civil life. The personnel of the Board was Messrs Edwin Edwards (chairman), -J. J. Poland and E. J. Wilton, with * Captain Williamson representing the Army. George Wm. Whiteside for whom : an appeal had been lodged by his .late father was described as farming and managing farms, under his •father's estate. A letter from the "Public Trustee backing up the estate was read, by acting counsel (Mr B. S. .Barry) in which it was stated ' that it was imperative, in the interests; of the estate to retain the services of reservist who was described .as a married man with two children. Adjourned sine die subject to reservist remaining in present occupation and continuing to serve with the Home Guard. • Cadmah's Parking Station appealed for the retention of the services •of F. C. Woods. Evidence by the "Company Manager, Mr F. B. Cadman, showed that his company had ralready been forced to close down five country stations and if the reservist in this instance was required to go to camp he would be forced to close the Whakatane. branch also. Reservist was a married man with three children. Adjourned for review till 31/7/43. Opouriao Dairy Company The Opouriao Dairy Company <(Mr T. E. Hamerton) appealed for the retention of the. services of re-, servists C. H. Moore and. A. G. Thomas. Mr Adams senior manager for the company, said that during the flush the company employed 24 hands most of them Maoris. There •were no single men employed. The company was fortunate in being .-able to draw upon a fairly regular :supply of Maori labour during the .season. , Adjourned sine die subject to reservists remaining in their present occupation and serve with the Home Guard. • The appeals for R. Goss and O. :S. Murdoch were ,withdrawn by • consent'. Paper Mills Appeals The Whakatane Paper Mills Ltd. for reservists T. R. Cairns, I. Iv. M. Milne and Geo. H. Murray. Mr E. C. Brown, manager, stated for the first reservist that he was working foreman in the grading •.and packing department. For Milne it was pointed out. that by dint of his special training in Scotland in the paper trade he could not be replaced.
A letter from the Air Force Secretary stated, that reservist was a volunteer for the Air Force and that in the event of a farther adjourn-* ment his application would be cancelled.' In the first, two instances sine die were granted subject to the usual conditions. The appeal for G. H. Murray was withdrawn '.by consent. Farm Appeals For Herbert K. Ashby, Mr C. Tickner appealed, it Avas stated that the i e.ser\ ist a\ as desirous of comnicnc'ing sharemilking on 330 cows on 151 acres. He stated that, he had been released from camp last year -.aflter 7 months service as a result of an application from Mr Tick nor. Held over temporarily pending re-, grading before Medical Board. For N. M. Clark it was stated .by his father that, on a farm of Kit* ..ncres he had only a land girl and a .married hand who was 'leaving at the end of the season. The chairman said that the Board •was not willing to allow single fit men to remain on farms while married men with children were going overseas. The board was willing to .f rant a three months- adjournment in order to enable appellant to make .-alternative arrangements, so tint .reservist might, be freed for camp.
(Mr Otley) appealed for reservist M. K. Lees avlio was described as store manager of a business at Matata, which lie had carried 011 singlehanded since the death of his mother who died last year. Adjourned sine die. The milking of a herd of 200 cows on a farm at Otakiri Avas cited by Mr Otley as the main grounds for the -apjical by ReA-ell Bros on 'behalf of a Hindu. reservist Narsai Naran. Decision reserA'ed. An Edgecumbe farmer Norman Ham, appealed for his sharemilker reservist DaA r id. V. Roguski avlio Avas attending to a herd of 100 coavs from which. 18,S301bs of fat Avere produced. Adjourned sine die (usual conditions). For M. A. Theobald (Mr Barr}*) for the Director of National Service set out the facts concerning reservist's propel of 237 acres which hq farmed jointly with his brother. Adjourned pending medical examination. J. B. Thomas, dairy farmer of Te Teko, stated that though originlie had appealed, he had at that time anticipated an appointment in the Home Guard, Avhich however had not materialised to date. He Avas therefore Avilling to go into camp and sacrifice his farming interests. The Board decided, that reserA'ist would be seizing better national interests b3 T staying on his farm. Ad-* journed sine die (usual conditions). The appeal by S. R. Brown, nurseryman and seedsman of Whakatane, AA'as considered on grounds of public interest, reservist claiming that he Avas the onls' nurseryman in this district and that most of the residents depended on his business for A'egetables and flower plants. The case was adjourned to alloAv the. Board time to make an inspection after which the appeal Avas dismissed, reserA'ist being required to enter camp on June 30tli. Other appeal results Avere: F. R.
