TANEATUA SPORTS

PATRIOTIC FUNDS BENEFIT

SPLENDID CROWD ATTENDS

KEEN MOUNTED EVENTS

• All roads led to Taneatua last ;• Saturday, where in Moody's paddock a quarter of a mite from the township a natural amphitheatre madte an ideal setting for the first Patriotic Sports meeting to be held itm that district during the present war. From beginning to end the day's fulll programme provided first class entertainment for the large crowd of spectators, drawn from all parts of the Plains. The organising was a feature in itself and we have no hesitation in saying that it was a model upon' which any future gatherings couild be based'. The sports opened Avith events for primary school children and carried through the day with a Avide A'ariety of mounted and flat events. The horses gave particularly good displajrs and we have no hesitation in saying that the standard in the equestarian items is steadily rising throughout the Rangitaiki and adjoining districts. Though the main centre of activity was .in the ring, the committee had seen to it that in other directions Avere not lacking. The usual field events, putting'the shot, tossing the caber, tossing the sheaf and a dozen and one other items made the higher ground a scene of activity and interest all the time. A row of substantial stalls. OA*erlooking the main ring also did brisk business. Their well stocked shelves were rapidl3 r depleted as the day Avore on and Ave have to hand it to the Taneatua ladies for their courtesy an efficiency in this: direction. The Highland Dancing Section also proved a popular centre and never failed to draw a crowd. It ■was particularly pleasing to note the number of young dancers* from the Plains taking the 'boards' again. The Whakatane. Pipe Band and the Boys Brass Band proA'ided musical Interludes throughout and tjieir presence Avas AA-armly appreciated. The list of aAvards Avas as under:— HORSE EVENTS Best Troop Horse: A.
