SUBSTANTIAL SUMS LOST

Large sums of money, amounting to as much as 300 dollars in some cases, have recently been, reported lost by American Marines on furlough in Wellington. There is good reason for stating that some of this money lias not found its way out of their pockets by accident. American Marines are known frequently to have in their possession substantial amounts of pay., drawn alter it lias accumulated for several months. There is a certain class, of women reported to be seeking the society of these men in the city, per-* suading them to over-indulgence in liquor, and then relieving them of their cash. In short, complaints have been lodged that they have been "polled" for their money. This type of crime is difficult to sheet home unless the" thief is caught in the most obvious circufciiH stances, and it is stated that there is more than a strong .suspicion that some women are reaping quijte a harvest in this manner. Reports have also been made that Marines' clothes have been ransack-i cd. and bill-folds removed while they | have been temporarily absent from rooms in boardinghouses at which they have been staying. There have been a number of flagrant instances.
