RACECOURSE DIVIDEND POLICE ESCORT FOR BACKERS A winner at Flemington racecourse, Melbourne, recently, pakT £696 for 5/-. on the totalisator, odds of 2784 to 1. The race was the Victorian Amah teur Turf Club's Stanley Plate, for 3 year olds and 25 horses lined "up. In the ring one horse was quoted at 100 to 1 with no takers, and one bookmaker .offered £100 : to 5/-, also without response. This was the winner, Solstar, a gekling by Solar Bear out of Greene! la. Only two horses were on the bookmakers 50 to 1 line—Christopher Wren and Salrina—and they filled the places in that order, beating some of the best horses, in theiir class in Australia. Eleven tickets for a win Avere taken out for Solstar and when "tote" officials learned the size of the dividends they called in police officers to give the backers: advice about collecting and arranged for transport to take them home. Only four collected immediately in cash ajul one gave £1 each to the 6.7 "tote" employees. Solstar's jockey was a new ap* prentice who had ridden in only two country races in his life.
