AWAKERI DANCE

SOLDIER HONOURED A dance was held in the Awakeri .Hall on Saturday last to honour Sgt. Ivan Jensen who was spending a brief period of leave in the district. Considering that notice was very short, quite a fair crowd attended. Dancing proceeded until midnight to the bright music provided by Messrs Haydcn, Jarrett and Thompson, Mr Coll Mac Donald again being M.C. Present at the function were Mrs I. .Tension, wife of the guest and his parents, Al}r and' Mrs R. Jensen. After supper Sgt Jensen was presented with a money licit and a •wallet. Mr T. Kerr conveying to him the verv best wishes of all ijresent. Reference wa.s made to the guest's voluntary service before, the war since the beginning of which he has acted as an instructor in New Zealand. In replying Sgt Jensscn thanked everyone for the. pleasant evening and the gifts which would be verv useful indeed. He w r as warmly plauded upon resuming his. seat. The president of the Patriotic Committee, Mr L. Luxton; assisted by Miss McKay, drew the Awakeri Patriotic raffle No. 1 which had created a good deal of interest and Droved to be a great success. Thanks to the energetic work of Messrs R. Burstall, L. Luxton, C. Duncan, D. Butler and C. Mac-Donald. The winning ticket, No. 2GB, was held by Mr E. R. (Tiny) Hunt: of Whakatane.
