A PLEASING EXPERIMENT

TOO many young- Maori girls of promise, having been given the benefit of secondary and sometimes University education, have found their way a few years after leaving school back to the most squalid conditions of Pa life. This is possibly due to the dearth of opportunities open to them in business or commercial life, for which they pos- • sessed the qualifications! Or possibly there may have been an unconscious bias against their appointment to such positions. It is therefore most pleasing to note the action of the Whakatane County Council in engaging its first female Maori clerk and we trust the example will be emulated by other business concerns in this town.
