ANNUAL REPORT

CHAMBER OF COMMERCE ACTIVITIES PAST YEAR REVIEWED , The following are extracts frontthe president's. (Mr C F. Thames) annual report to thtr Whakatane Chamber of Commerce at the forth-' coining annual meeting:— Garbage Collection: This hardy annual has been moved a stage further. Under your instructions, Mr Whitworth, Mr Kingslcy-Smitli and myself waited on the Borough Couti- , cil and put our case. We stressed: the need for a collection on account : of the fljr and rat menace and in & general way. Only one question was forthcoming and that was from Mr A. J. Canning Avho asked how the project was to be financed. My reply to this was; that it was nojfj the duty nor the desire of the Chamber of. Commerce to instruct the Borough: Council' in what, they should do themselves, but I did sug-t gest that a levy on rates; or a 'bachsheesh' service, was, in our opinion, not the answer. " , Bus Service: In accordance with, instructions 1 appeared before Mr Phelan, the Transport Controller in support of an application by Mr Cave for a permit to run a bus ser-> vice. We were suggesting, at his , request, for permit' to run by a specified route on specified days. Mr Phelan saw the necessity of. a bus service Avithin the Borough and gave a permit for Mr Cave to> run any route he "wished on 'tiny days he Avished. Rural Service: 4 Following upou. our communications to the Manpower Committee asking for Mr J. G. Dockray to be relieved of Afrniy Service, the reservist was ordered to appear before the Appeal Board. I appeared as appellant and received a particularly good hearing. The result was that Dockray's case was stood down to allow of a Difrectorfjs appeal of Avhich he will be notified.. Shelters: Following upon our second letter to the Borough Council herein, the Mayor raised that, point to your deputation on the garbage question. We stressed the need, for a shelter rather than a seat, arsd he in turn suggested more seats. Airport: The County Council called a meeting of the Borough Co-irnjT cil and ourselves to meet the Coun y Council and discuss the question of the establishment of an Airport near Wliakatane. I asked Mr King and Mr Kingsley-Smith to accompany inc. and, at that meeting qu*Be a lot of discussion took place. Tiie main scheme of the County Count cil was the establishment of an Airport on the plantation property situated beyond Te T'eko. This is the* County property and can be asquired at a reasonable figure. The outcome of the meeting Avas that the Borough Council would - discuss the project and meet the County Council at a later date to which meeting Ave Avould be invited. Rehabilitation: Mr Moolian. tliei Chairman of the Rehabilitation Board from Wellington, met the parties concerned at a meeting held on Tuesday the 121.th inst at the Borough Chambers. He spoke at length on the Rehabilitation scheme and, invited questions. Your delegates, Messrs King, Whitworth anil myself certainly made ourselves heard. We aslced over three-quart-ers of the questions and. in every case they Avere constructiA'e. Tlie? writer moved that, a committee bte> set up to control the affairs of the men from this district and that the: necessary action be taken immediately. This was carried. Opotiki representatives then moved the same resolution and- this also Avas carried.
