STATION ROAD
PERIODIC FLOODING
RATEPAYER APPEALS TO COUNCIL
Writing .the Whakatane County Council at its meeting last Tuesday Mr W. A. Souter mentioned tiie state of Station Road and referred to the periodic Hooding of this highr way and ol a large area of adjoining farming country. It was fully appreciated that drainage matters were largely the concern of tie Lands Department, but the protection of this road from even mmoi' floods Avould have' a correspondingly beneficial effect on the adjoining iarms. He asked, for the following information:— (ft) If any definite application had been made to the Highways Boardi to have the road raised at the. two lowest, places opposite Mr W. A. Smith's property. (b) lit this work has been recom-i mended to the Government in ro sponse to the recent invitation to Local Bodies to submit details of works, suitable for the enjoyment of. men in rehabilitation schemes at the end of the war. Mr Souter appealed to the Council to take a leading part in organising a joint, effort with the Lands Department, and the Highways Board to have remedial work put in hand. The Council resolved that the rer* ply to question (a) be in the affirmative, and to question (b) in the negative and further that as a result of its investigations the Council regretted that, no major work was possible until after the war. • A later report from the Works Committee on the same matter, however indicated that the Council was prepared to take measures; to make for temporary improvements by way of seeking authority from the Main Highways Board, to raise tlxe west side of Station Road north of Mr Boon's bridge over a length of eight chains and carry out the work at the Council's expense.
