WEEK-END CAMP
TRAFFIC CONTROL CORPS TRAINING AT OHIWA On Saturday and Sunday last thePlatoon of No. 8 Company licld a very successful week-end training camp. A small working party erected the tents and prepared the site on the previous Friday and Saturday mornings. The camp training commenced at 2 p.m. on Saturday with Musketry Instruction from WOI E. Matthews from Battalion Headquarters. This instruction continued throughout. the afternoon. After the tea adjournment a lecture was, given by Lieut. W. Rixon on Army Conif munication and military writing. This was followed by a lecture 1 by the Company Commander Lieut. J. H. Delves on Arniy Convoy Traffic Control. This completed the first day's in-> struction. On Sunday morning Reveille sounded at 0600 hours and after breakfast the day's instruction , started Avith roll call at 0730 hours. Shortly after this personnel from Taneatua, Opotiki and Paroa Pla- • toons, arrived to take part in the day's instruction. The first period . was allotted to instruction by W. 0.1. Matthews in the use of the Thompson sub-machine, gun. This lecture proved to be a popular one and was extended for a second per-~"*V iod. The balance of the morning _ was.taken up by Company drill. Prior to this occasion, the Company 5 Avliich coA'ers an area from Opotiki to Matata, has never had an opportunity to learn this drill as they had never paraded together as one unit. After the break for dinner, the A-arious phrases of Company drill Avas dealt "with very comprehensively by W. 0.1. Matthews until the afternoon tea adjournment. During the afternoon the Acting Zone Commander, Captain Brebner | arriA T ed. He A\*as met by "the Company Commandpr and conducted on to the parade ground Avhere tho Company AA r as inspected. After inspection Capt Brebner viewed the camp site. The next session was a period of Traffic Signal instruction given by the Company Commander assisted by the Company Sergeant Majpr R. West. The day"s instruct tion closed with a march past, the .Salute being taken by Capt Brebner. Before dismissal the Company was . addressed by Capt Brebner who of- « fered some very useful criticism and advice. He also expressed his delight at being present, and. stated he Avas very pleased with srhat he had seen that afternoon. He- also apologised for the unavoidable ab- * sence of Lieut-Col Dawe and assure ed the Company that the Colonel would, be present if at all possible to inspect them at their next camp. The success of the eamp was in no small part due to the. efforts! of. the Platoon Commander 2 , /Lie*ut. W. Hurst, Sergeant W. Hume, Corporal W. Parker and Lance poral L. EdAvards avlio devoted a lot. of time in organising the camp ar~ rangements, also to W. 0.1. K Matthews who carried out. the lion's. * share of instruction. The highlight of the camp was Quartermaster Corporal B. Parker Avho Avas camp cook and excelled himself in providing * punctual and appertising meals. Visiting officers of the Company ( who assisted with the instruction Avere 2,/Lieut. A. Campbell, Opotiki Platoon, and 2/Lieut V. Arbuckle,j; Paroa Platoon.
