HIGH SCHOOL CRICKET
TAURANGA DEFEATS WHAKATANE RESULT OF RETURN GAME The. return challenge to Tauranga District High School tendered by Whakatane District High School for the Baker Cricket Cup was accepted and played at the Tauranga Domain on Friday 12th. The match -which resulted in a win for Tauranga was favoured with excellent weather. The; Whakatane fielding and howling showed, good, form, but the batting in tlie first innings was not strong enough, to equal the. score put up by Tauranga. In the second innings the Tauranga team knocked up 56 while the Whakatane team which still had 5 wickets in hand when time expired had made 59. Head showed up prominently in his bowflmg by taking 6 for 21 in the first innings, and 4 for 16 in the second innings. Morning tea was served on the arrival of the Whakatane. team at 11 a.m. by the pupils of the Tauranga school under the charge of Miss Aplin, and play commenced at 11.3G|. Tauranga won the toss and. wont into bat first. The match was adjourned at 12.45 for lunch Avhich did credit to the cooking department of the Tauranga Tech. which prepared much of the food. The Whakatane team commenced their innings just before lunch, the last wicket falling at 2.4.5. Tauranga's second innings finished at. 3.50, while Whakatane was unable to complete their's owing to lack of time. A friendly tennis match was also ar-> ranged between Tauranga District High School girls, the Whakatane team winning by 88 games to Tau-t ranga's 85. Time did not allow the innings to be finished. When stumps were drawn at 4.30 Mr E. T. Baker donor of the cup, made a short speech in which he mentioned chiefly the pleasure, he felt in being able to attend the match. He also commented on the good fortune of the Tauranga team in having as a teacher at the school, Mr H. Gaulton, a very keen cricketer and an, excellent coach. He concluded by congratulating the Tauranga team on their Avin and also the Whakatane team on the hard fight put up by them., The captain of the Tauranga team, G. Ronayne, then thanked Wliakatane for a most enjoyable game, MiBaker, Mr GaUlton and Mr J. Steward. for their umpiring, and the girls of the Tauranga school for serving the refreshments. The captain of the Whakatane team, G . Boswell'. replied by thank-, ing .the Tauranga team for their hospitality, and also mentioned the prospects of some friendly football matches in the. near future.
