JOINT SERVICE
ST. JOHN AMBULANCE AND RED CROSS SERVICEMEN'S CLUB A meeting of the Joint Committee of the St. Jiohn Ambulance and Red Cross Society was held, in tlu> Borough Council Chambers on Friday, 12 th February at 7.:W p.m. Mrs W. Sullivan was in the chair. Mrs Sullivan reported that the Red Cross ladies had started Avork on 24 pairs of pyjamas, and some material for dressing gowns sent tloAvn by the Auckland Joint Council. A letter Avas read from Mr Saunders stating that the Council Avas prepared to assist a Servicemen's .Club by remitting rates on the. property leased for same.. Disappointment Avas expressed that nothing further had been done towards establishing such a club, but the difficulty of course Avas obtaining suitable premises;. The opinion Avas again expressed that the Mayor Avas the person to take the lead. . Mr Canning said that the rooms of the Whakatane Club avouU! be very suitable, and he was confident that, if the suggestion Avas made to a meeting of members of the Club; they Avould be prepared to giVe up the rooms for the duration of the Avar. Ho Avould be ready to support such a suggestion and put a motion to the meeting that the secretary write to the Mayor, again asking him to take the lead in. establishing a Servicemen's Club in Whakatane and proposing that he call a meeting of the Whakatane Club and ask them to give up their rooms, or take such action as lie think fit. This Avas seconded by Mr Bigelow and carried. Discussion took ph|ce re the issue' of a Joint ScrA'ice badge, and it Avas decided to seek further information before taking any action. Mrs Sullivan moA'cd that a letter be sent to the Joint. Council in Auckland pointing out that avc have no representation on the Provincial Council, and are not. au fait with Avorlc being done, and asking that this committee should have copies of minutes of meetings of the Provincial Council and be kept informed of the work of that bod}-. Seconded by Mr Canning and carried. Miss Tait moved that a letter of commendation be sent to the boys Kelvin and John Crozier and Leslie Goodall, avlio recently rescued two little girls from the riA r er. Seconded by Mrs Wins tone and. carried. The next meeting of tlie committee Avill be on the second Friday in April, the ninth.
