DEFERRED AGAIN
POSITION OF TAXI STAND NEW INSPECTION DESIRED The three month controversy regarding the site for the town's taxi stand has developed into a regular game of battledore and shuttlecock, the Borough Council and Works Committee tossing the subject from one to the other without arriving at any finality. The committee has once again prolonged the question by 'deferring consideration in the meantime, pending a fresh inspection' (the fifth we think). A letter of objection to the site in front of tlie Civic Buildings; Avas read from Mr F. M. Abbott, who pointed out. that most of the controversy could have been avoided if the Taxi Company had, sought the Council's advice in the first place instead of appropriating the stand and then proceeding to use it as. a lever to get their own way. fThe writer claimed that it. was impossible for the company to provide a 24-hour service, entailing a person sleeping on the premises, in view of the Health Inspector's stand, with regard to hygiene. His shop drew a large number of vehicles to the corner and a stand would aggravate the congestion and be most detrimental to his business. The suggestion that the. AARD service should act as a precedent, in the; present case was no criterion as the service only entailed a daily run from Rotorua a"nd was instituted many years ago when the car population on the plains was far less than it was torday.,. Cr Armstrong suggested that a square might be marked off near the Monument in the centre of the road for the use of one taxi, its place to be taken by another as soon as it was engaged. Such an arrangement would not lead to congestion and would be meeting the company at least to some extent. The Mayor promised that the suggestion would lie borne in mind when the committee made its inspection.
