MEN'S WORKING CLOTHES

Brief reference to the priccs and quality of men's working clothes were made at the monthly meeting of the Auckland Provincial Executive of the New Zealand Farmers' Union on February 17. A letter from the Price Tribunal in reference to prices stated, that the. profit per-i mittcd on all classes of working clothes was considerably less than the margin allowed on other types of clothing. All costs were investigated carefully before prices were approved. The Tribunal, it was stated, had no control in respect of the quality of clothing. A remit from the Te Awamutu Branch, forwarded by the Waikato Sub-province, suggested that the Government be asked to ensure an adequate supply of

working clothes for farmers and other workers. The admission by the Price Tribunal that while it regulated prices it had no control in regard to quality exercised the risible faculties of delegates. "Of course prices depend upon material," remarked the president (Captain H. M. Rushworth); a shirt of steel mail, for instance, would cost more, than a cotton shirt. He remarked that, working shirts which once sold for 4s or 5s were now priced at 245. The question of supplies of clothing was. referred to the Dominion Executive.
