URGED TO REBEL
APPEAL TO THE GERMANS
TEAR NAZI REGIME TO PIECES
A moving appeal to his German friends in the Rhine and Ruhr tricts rebel against Nazi domination was. recently broadcast from London. The speaker was Hans Fladung, who had taken part in the underground struggle, insiclo Germany for years, and who was brought to England in 1938 after having been nearly tortured to death by the Gestapo. The speech, in the following terms, was mad© aft- a meeting of the Free German League of Culture in Great. Britain in support of the exhibition of "Allies Inside Germany.'" Dear friends inside tlie Rhineland and the, Ruhr districts,, on the Wupper and Denne, in Dusseldprf, Essen, Solingen, Remscheid and Cologne. We know each other from 44 Cologne Street. It is Hans Fladung speaking. Your Hans who has never ceased to be wiJSh you, in tlie illegal work, in the Gestapo prison of Aranienburg, in the Hausmannof. in the convict prison, in the sickbed, and now here in London., Why is it tlujt I am now speaking to you for the; first time? In London on all tlie hoardings and in the underground are great posters. You can see on them, (the shape of a German worker with clejichedi fists with the words: "Exhibition Allies Inside Germany." "Allies Inside Germany" means in German: "Freunde und Ve-rbuendete innerhalb Deutschland.*' In the large window at the. exhibition you can read tlie- following Avords of Mr Churchill: "The best solution Avould be if the Nazi regime is torn to pieces by (the German people themsehres." We, a group of German anti-Nazis in England, have arranged this exhibition: British intellectuals, but especiall}- British workers have helped us.
This exhibition shows you, dear friends, shows your struggle, which you have waged against Hitler since 1933, your sufferings in prison and concentration camps, the whole terror machine of the Nazis, but there are also many copies, of illegal papers and pamphlets, news about your activities—and now London workers go through this exhibition and get to know you. Going Over to Offensive And here 1 in this hall, where I am speaking, sit representatives of great British organisations, and in paiWicular, delegates from London trade unions, factoriesi, co-ops, and working class parties. These 1 people know about you. My friends and I have been speaking for weeks at. a great number of workers' meetings about the struggle of German antiNazis inside Germany. In this war there arc two kinds of battlefields. One is the military struggle of the freedom-loving nations, led by Great Britain and the Soviet. Union against Hitler and the other what Himmler called already in 193S "Germany's internal battlefield.'' This! is the battlefield on which Hi'Sler has, waged a war against the German people and against you.
In the same, way the freedom-lov-ing people in the Avar against Hitler arc going over to the offensive on all fronts and increasing their efforts to beat Hitler decisively this year, so you musit also go from the defensive to the offensive.
The freedom-loving people of the world would like to include you in the comradeship of arms, which will beat Hitler this year.
You will understand how deeply I was moved when I heard that the 'Ruhr Echo' and 'Freiheit' had reappeared. Our papers, my papers, are again taking part, in the' struggle against Fiscism. I know under what dangers these papers are being produced and distributed. I am convinced that I am speaking in the name of all freedom-loving people, when I thank you for your courage."
From factory to factory in London the news travels: "Sabotage at Mannesinann in Dusseldorf, five hours' strike in the Rhine metal v/orks." Through German anti-Nazis
in London factories the British workers know what, that means. You will understand that the world judges Germans'- by what it sees: The shame of the persecution of the Jews, the attack on all the people on the Continent, the bestial terror in Czechoslovakia, Poland, and in other oppressed countries, at. atrocities on the Eastern Front. The world hates Hitler and the Fascist regime in Germany, the free-dom-loving people of, the world are determined to fight this regime' to the end and to extinguish it. You have a great responsibility to the freedom-loving world and for the future of Germany. All those, who know about your activities are waiting for every report of sabotage, strike, resistance in Germanj r . The more you do, the more friends you will win in the world, the more, they will be willing to support your work—in so far as it is possible to do so from outside—the more; the inner and the outer front against Hitler will be we-ldcd together, the greater the chance that the German people will take an equal place among the freedom-loving people after the defeat and the destruction of Hitler and all Fascist- elements.
I hope to speak more o£-ten to you. The next months will be months of great decisions.
The Army strikes heavy blows at the Na.£i Army on the Eastern > Front. Britain and America prepare for a second front in the west. You must, strike from within Germany. Thus Hitler will be beaten this year, and the world and the German people will be freed from Fascism once 1 and for all.
Friends on RliinQ and Ruhr. Once we have chased the reactionary "Kappisten" over the Wupper, this time the task will be. a heavier nnd more difficult one, but the Nazis must be thrown over the Wupper never to return again. Remind the workers on the Rhine and Ruhr daily and hourly of. their traditions. I am sure that you will bring new honour to these traditions and that there will stand on the Rhine a much greater and nobler army of freedom than in the daj T s of Kapp.
Good-bye. comrades and friends on Rhine and Ruhr, I am ahvaj-s
»vith you.
