A. AND P. ASSOCIATION'S FIXTURE LARGE CROWD O>N SHOWGROUNDS Gloriously fine weather favoured the Horse Show audi Gym"khana staged by the Whakatane and Rangitaiki A. and P. Association on the local showgroundsi last Saturday. As a result a large crowd attended netting a -gate of £150. On the day it is * confidently anticipated that the Association will more than achi--eve its objective viz., the wiping off o'f the existing overdraft and the placing of future 1 fixtures upon a financial basis. Quite apart from thils aspect the -event was an outstanding success and a distinct credit to the Association, Keen Interest in, Events The large crowd filled all sides * of the arena and there can: be no doubt about the popularity of the •ring events. Splendid entries were •received for the jumping section and, the judge Mr F. Vosper 3 was warm in his praise for the fine type of. horses which the district produced. The average horse seen on Saturday would, lie said, have done • crcdit to'any show in the Dominion. The crowd were thrilled at. the splendid jumping exhibitions, many of which were won by competitors ifrom Pukehina and other Te Puke • district where Mounted Gymkhanas ■Seem to have become the vogue. Heavy Horses Though the classes wore limited in this section Sisam and Sons, splendid entries won the greatest commendation from the judge, Mr R. Curruth. Had the travelling facili- • ties been better there could be no shadow of doubt but that, this group would have been more in agreement with the lighter horses. Great public interest was however evinced in "the heavier horses Avhich made an 'Imposing display in the parade. Highland Dancing Judged, by Mr J. Cameron, of TauTanga, the Highland Dancing which -was included at the last minute in -the programme, drew a limited but keen group of competitors from the Plains and the town. The dancing was of a uniformity good standai-d and also attracted a large crowd throughout the afternoon. Pipe music was supplied, by Pipers Laurie Johnston and Jack Graham while the steward assisting the . judge was Mrs M. Craig. The Grand Parade Headed by the Pipe Band the grand parade circled the ring in colourful column. Behind the band marched the Scottish Scouts and the • dancing competitors, the latter lending a bright splash of colour to the procession. The. horse competitors followed immediately behind with the larger draught section bringing up the 'rear.i The whole made an imposing parade which won the- acclamations of {th'd crowd as it passed. In the words £>f a |Waikato visitor the display was a real 1 credit to the district in -the face of the present difficulties. Catering and General! The catering for the meeting was "in the. hands of the local branch of the Red Cross Association, the mcm'bers of which worked assidiously throughout the day, and. we understand realised as a result a substantial addition to their funds;. The Sftcljf; workers are to be congratulat- ' iscL Selections by the Boys' Band during the afternoon were likewise warmly appreciated by the' crowd many remarking on the standard of -playing which had been achieved. Keen interest attended the competition for tossing the sheaf, where once again Max Hunt and Taute Edwards were to be seen vying with • each other in their respective heaving capacities. The winner hoAvever turned out to* be a new champion an the person of Bill Howat Jnr., who nearly brought a bird's nest - down in the process. The warmest congratulations go to the secretary, Mr G. R. Kent, . and his assistants, to the hardworking and painstaking president, Mr R. Ruddick, and to all those who took the parts: of officers or stewards in the Association's interests.
