EVIDENCE AT INQUEST

DUE TO ASPHYXIATION

The inquest concerning the dejiSlh of Adrienne Lee Grace, 4 months old child of Mr and Mrs: L. A. Grace, Church Street, Opotiki, was concluded at the Opotiki Courthouse on Friday before Mr F. J. Short, district coroner. Evidence 1 of identification had been given on January 19, by Mr R. J. Webb. ( Mr H. J. Mail stated in evidence that at 7 o'clock on the morning of January 19 he received % (telephone call from Mrs Freeman asking him to come to the house as her sister's baby had been suffocated. Upon arrival he found that the baby Avas dead. The cause of the death of the child Avas; asphyxia and it may have 1 been caused by the teddy bear blanket Avhich the child had pulled oA r er her head during the night. The air passages; Avere full of bloodstained frothy mucus. The body of the child appeared ,'l\> be that, of an ordinary healthy infant. Mrs Doris Hansen Grace, mother of the child, told of her discovery when she aAvoke and looked in the baby's basinette. The teddy bear rug Avas over her face. She had had a cold for three .days. The baby slept peacefully during, the night. The bgby was a healthy child. The coroner 'returned a verdict that death was due to asphyxia.
