WIN FOR WAIMANA iiESUIIIIECTING Till- GAME Anniversary Day saw the start again of cricket in WhaUatane alter a dormant period due to war conditions of same 18 months. lit is pleasing to once again see our Domain grounds used for such a. sport and it is generally hoped that, once more the:'game has a- start it wil'l be. fostered and that there may still be an organisation for after the war. Thanks are due to some keen young players in our town and the most willing help of those old members who came forward to keep the game alive. Friday saw an experienced Waimana team meet a combined Whakatane. team who took the field sadly lacking the'practice. Although defeated the home team put up quite a good showing and it is hoped that, further practice will enable the club to maintain a keen eleven.
Waimana batted first and the first wicket fell at 7 runs. However K. Bell and V. Miller made a sound second wicket partnership and carried the score to 124- before K. Bell fell to a good ball from McKenzie. Miller carried on in grand stjde and looked like reaching his century when he smacked one t.o the wicketkeeper Dew hurst with his score on the board at Do. Although far from chanceless Miller played, a forceful knock which included (j sixes and 10 1 fours. J. Ward law and N. Mcnzies contributed 34 and 18 in fast time and; the side was all out at lunch for 239.
Whakatane. batted at 1. p.m. and lost 2 cheap wickets for 14 runs when L. R. Spring and W. McKenzie made a .stand, and carried the score to 86 before McKenzie was caught by Miller behind the wickets. W. Johns and G. O. Smart followed and Avhen the score was at 116 Spring fell to the wicketkeeper oft H. Wardlaw. The innings closed at 'i p.m. with Whakatane all out for 147 runs.
