That statement is quite incorrect as the primary purpose for establishing a plantation was solely to protect the bridge, the approach and the road, and this: -work was carried out by the direction of the Public Works, Engineer (Mr Watkinson) who refused to allow any Government monies 'to be spent on another bridge filling until the protective plantation was established. Sir,—ln reference to the recent article appearing in your issue of the 2nd inst, under the heading "Ratepayer's Letter'" I feel it would r be only fair to allow me to seit' out my reasons for writing the County Council regarding the taking of the land in question under the Public Works Act. It was never my intention to allege a deliberate delay for an uliterior purpose on the part of. the County Solicitor,, nor have I at any time made such a statement. The facts are briefly these as were set out in my letter to the council on October 24 last: — « "Owing to the long delay in issuing Proclamations for taking land under the Public Works Act for aportion of road and also for protection It have corresponded with the Minister of Public Works and now have a reply from him which plainly indicates that the munication has been at faulti in. the letter to the Minister about the wil- • low plantation and this has caused the delay.
