LEADING SIRES The list of winning sires this season is still headed by Foxbridge with £8317, with Bulandshar next £7485 and Hunting Song third with £4544. THOROUGHBRED ADDITIONS Mr W. Cleary, of Auckland,, who has raced Regal Fox successfully this season, has secured a lease from Mr J. Sklenors two two year olds by Foxbridge from Beryl Latour and Gay Sister respectively. PRIZE MONEY For the Matamata meeting liste'd for February 6t.h the sum of £1480 has been allotted in stakes. The Matamata Cup will be worth £350 and the Okoroire Hack Handicap £225. I TOTALIS ATOR TURNOVER The tjtalisator turnover on the first day of the Wellington meeting was £146,080 which was a record for -the course. £22,981 was invested on the Cup, also a record for •Trentham. SUCCESS OF A FILLY The victory of. Indian Princess in the Great Northern Derby was: the. first registered by a filly since Silver Scorn took the honours, in 1933. A SHOE TORN OFF j In the Wellington Telegraph Handicap, termed by one Avriter "a scramble" Fur Coat had a hind shoe torn off by being galloped on by a competitor, and ay as lame on returning to the birdcage. BACK TO THE SADDLE W. H. Jones, a successful rider in years gone by, but who lately has been in the ranks of Auckland fruit-growers, has now taken a position with trainer George Greiene at Hastings. PURCHASED FOR WAIKATO Wayfarer has been sold bv Mr G. Murray-Aynsley, of Christchurch, to a patron of J. L. Muir's Te Rapa stablg. He is a three j r ear old brown gelding by Nightmarch—Muff, by Arrowsmith from Contempt the dam of high-class performers. BEST TWO YEAR OLD The Bulandshar—Rulette colt Subadar, winner in both his Ellerslic starts, is expected to be the best two year old in the Auckland Province this season. At Easter he will probably meet some of the southern juveniles, and by then should be fully ready to take hfs part successfully. WELLINGTON CUP WINNERS In the period 1913 to 194.3 the Wellington Cup has been won by five year olds; on 12 occasions, four year olds Avere victorious in 10, three year olds in three and the aged division in four. Up to 1941 the distance was a mide and a half, AA'lien it was altered to two miles. ROYAL LANCER UNLUCKY Royal Lancer, winner of the New Zealand Cup, is deemed to have been the unlucky horse in the running of the Wellington Cup. In the final run he wns slightly eased just at the moment Avhen The Joker put in a brilliant sprint. The whip Avas brought out and Royal Lancer responded but not quick enough to aA'ert a head defeat. He is noAV being acclaimed the best handicap horse in 'the Dominion. A SON OF CUDDLE The tAvo year old Gamble, the first of the progeny of the Ncay Zealand; and Auckland Cup Avinner, Cuddle, is taking matters very leisurely on the Trentham tracks, and is not creating a-cry much enthusiasm oA'er his future. One Avriter states: "Gamble is never going to be AYorth a hair from the tail of his mam. Cuddle." A LIKELY LIGHTWEIGHT By finishing second to Volifox in the Goodwood Handicap, one mile, on the final day of the Auckland meeting, the form of Justina. was Aery encouraging.
