OBITUARY

MR A. W. CHAMBERS The death occurred last "Wednesday evening of Mr Alan Ward Cham-*' bers a well-known and widely respected resident of. both Opotiki and Whakatane. Born at Adelaide, South Australia, he was educated in that town. His father was a well-known? racing judge in South Australia. As a young man the late Mr ,Ghaia-» hers joined the Union Bank and ia 1908 was transferred to New Zealand as accountant. After a brief stay in Auckland he was transferred! to the Opotiki branch in 1910 and, shortly afterwards married. Later Jie left the bank and became accountant in the old established busmen conducted by his father-in-law the late Mr H. T. Torrens of Opotiki. He remained with the firm for some years, making many friends in that district and establishing a repute tion for his integrity and citizen:ship. Later he decided to take up farming and carried on successfully until a severe illness: compelled his retimement and left him with indifferent health for the rest, of his life. The long period of convalescence which he was forced to take was spent in the main at Ohopc Beach where he remained Avitli his family for two years. lin 1932 be accepted a position as unemployment officer for Whakatane and later when the slump conditions improved joined the staff of A. J. Canning and Co as accountant.

Nine months ago his consistency failing health compelled 6 his retirement from active work. He remained however cheerful and bright up till the time of his last* admass sion to the local hosiptal. He was in his earlier days a keen sportsman, and will long, be remembered by the bowling fraternity of the two towns as one of the keenest enthuse lasts who ever drove at the jack.;

He is survived by his widow ajEfll six children; his three sons being absent at the time of his death with the armed forces overseas. They are Messrs Patrick (R.N.Z.A.F.), James (M.E.F.) and Donald (P.O.W. Italy) and Mrs L. M. Cristall (Olakiri), and Misses Judy and Nancy Chambers of Ayhakatyie. The deepest sympathy of town and distnci; will be extended .them in their sorrow. "W-. L
