WELL BRED MR J. IRWIN'S BILLY PEACH RELATED TO DERBY WINNER Billy Peach, Mr J. Irwin's chestnut gelding which paid over £440 at the Auckland Racing Club's meeting on Ncav Year's Day, is related to the famous horse Syllene, one of the best stallions the world has ever known. Syllene not only won the English Derby but sired three Derby winners as avoll . Mr Irwin is the breeder of Billy Peach, the dam being his mare Seclusion, the sire being Jay. Seclusion was by Hyllus out of Ohinewairua an'd Hyllus was by Hs r mettus out of Monty. Hymettus was by Syllene. Ohinewairua who is a three-quarter sister to two of the best handicap horses in New Zealand in their day, Californian and Goldfinder, is by San Fran cut of Maid of Astrolat. San Fran was by Gazo while Maid of Astolat was by Sir Lancelot out. of Dazzle. The breeding on the sire's side of Billy Peach is Jay by Magpie out of WMtebird and it is from this family that Billy Peach gets his name. Mr Irwin had some difficulty in selecting a suitable name for the hoi.se and eventually looked up the dictionary for the definition of Jay and Magpie, finding both were /defined as chattering birds. As the Australian budgerigar Billy Peach, which has a vocabulary of over 500 words and broadcast at that time over the radio in New Zealand, was the best _ chattering bird Mr Irwin knew he decided to call his horse whose sires were called, after chattering birds Billy Peach. PROSPECTS APPEAR BRIGHT . Since returning from the Taranaki trip, where lie won two races during thef holidays, Lord Defoe has not been overtaxed. The chestnut, gelding has never been better than he is at the. present stage, and is likely to elxtend his record before the season is much further advanced.

CHANGE OF OWNERSHIP The Hunting Song—Gold Moriey representative, Gold Money Song, lias been purchased by owner-train-o,r Martinvich, of Takanini. Early in the 1941-42 season Gold Money Song was a good winner, but this term has not been racing up to his best. At Stratford in Christmas week he won the Open Flying Handicap, and his supporters received a nice double figures dividend. There is no doubt whatever about his speed and well placed in the remainder of the season should be a payable proposition. IMPROVING It is referred that Kindergarten is recovering from the effects of the knock sustained after the -Auckland Cup but it will be some weeks yet before he can again be produced in racing trim. LUCKY NUMBER ♦ Number 6 on the card had a good run on the opening day of the Wellington Racing Club's 1 Summer Meeting at Trentliam. There were eight runners carrying No. 6 saddle colth. It won the first race, ran third in the) second, won the sixth and Avon the eighth. Win dividends totalled £35 7s, and place £19 2s 6d. BRED THE RIGHT WAY The two year old filly Katie Scaiv Lett has improved a. good deal of late, and is also shaping. better in her workouts. By Hunting Song from Adornment, the breeding of Katie Scarlett suggests that, she will eventually make good. Her easy style of galloping also strengthens that opinion. A FIT HORSE Latest reports from Avondale state that Regal Fox is not doing any serious tasks at present. If the ground remains hard the son of Foxbridge is unlikely to go to the post for the Talcapuna Cup this week. However, H. Goldfinch has the black horse so well that lie will need little fast work to enable him to run out the mile, and a half journey if required to do so.
