PRIDE OF THEIR RACE
ONE of the most graceful tributes to the men of the Maori Battalion has been published, as emanating from a Pakeha brother-in-arms. The wording is simple and direct and cannot be confused with flattery or the hope of notoriety. It is a straightout and direct tribute of admiration from one soldier to another and should illustrate to New Zealanderj? as a whole, just what splendid material lies within the* character of our native race if it can be but stimulated and sympathetically applied.. Understanding and self discipline appear to be the key words. These two,, must play a prominent part in dealings with the Maoris of to-mor-row if we are to desire their expansion and progression. Continued nonchallance and apathy can only succeed in sowing seeds of discontent, abuse and corruption which in a race, highly emotional and expanding readily in numbers, can become components of a highly explosive nature.
