STAKES WON | Kindergarten has now won the sum of £12,762 10s in stakes. All his; racing has been in war time, otherwise his wins may have been fully £20,000. WON A DOUBLE Radiant Bay, a member of R. H. Martin's Matamata team won both hurdle events at the Stratford meeting on January 1 and 2. He was ridden by B. Evans. NATIONAL SALES The 17th New Zealand National Thoroughbred Sales will be held at Trcntham on 15th and 22nd January. No less than 202 thoroughbred yearlings will be submitted. The entry of Messrs F. J. SaVage and Sons, of Waimana, consists of a black colt by Revelation—Love Flier; a bay colt by Revelation—Eudoracc; a ba3* colt by Baffles;— Short Circuit; a bay filly by Revelation—lthaea; a bay fillv by Revelation—Caste; a chestnut filly by Revelation—Min Lu; and a black filly by Raceful— La Femme Noire.

VARUNA IMPROVING The Vermecr gelding, Varuna, won his first hurdle race on the first day at Stratford. Now that he is gaining confidence over the battens he should register further victories. He is trained by J. H. Muir, of Te Rapa, who at the time Varuna was winning at Stratford, was piloting Gold Spot to victory in the Grafton Hu rd les at, EI 1 c rsi ie. A SPORTSMAN'S LOSS The promising two year old colt Islam by Bulandshar—Roman Scandal, owned by Mr J. D.i McDougall, owner of Happy Eluding, died from internal trouble at Riccarton last week. He was purchased at the 1942 National Sales for 700 guineas. HIS LUCK WAS OUT The luck of Mr W. S. Goosman's Laughing Fox maj>- be said to be not of the best. On Boxing Day he ran third in the Robinson Handicap, and on New Year's Daj r he finished second, to Billy Peach in the Ellerslie Handicap. In smaller fields this Foxbridge—Comedienne gelding will do better. A NARROW MARGIN Nizam, the full brother to High Caste, the runner-up in the Great Northern Derby, was only beaten a nose by Indian Princess. The mile and a half was traversed in 2min 32secs, so there is reason to expect that Nizam will yet prove a worthy successor to his illustrious brother. A SPEEDY GALLOPER A fine exhibition of sprinting was given by the. Wanganui filly Clarice, when she Avon the Newmarket Handicap from Cambria and Black Majesty. Heading the field at the distance post she Avon going aAvay by a length in the fast time of 1.11 3-5. She was ridden by W. Broughton, who earlier in the day scored on Lou Rosa in the principal handicap. BADLY GALLOPED ON That consistent preformer Sigloav, Avas badly galloped on at the ManaAvatu meeting, and is now practically a cot case. For the in which he met this trouble lie Avas very heavily backed, and unfortunately for his supporters it may be many weeks before they can get their money back Avith the aid of SigloAv. EPIDEMIC OF SICKNESS

A week before the Auckland, meeting Alex Cook's stable at Te Aavo--mutu experienced an epidemic, of sickness. Consequently Beau Leon was unable to take his placec in the Cup field, in which lie was confidently expected to run prominentlj*. Whether he. would have proved, capable of running the tAvo miles in 3min 22sees must ever remain in doubt. DEOLALI RESUMES The Levin owned Bulandshar mare Deolali, has resumed work after a short spell, and is expected to race prominentlj* at February meetings. WON EIGHT RACES This season Cteuice by SolicitorGeneral from Royal Flavour, has won eight races.. She was bred by her owner, Mr Stammers, of Elthani, who purchased her dam at the Ellerslie dispersal sale in 1939 for 100 guineas. Royal Flavour Avas bred in Australia and won tlie Queensland Sires Produce Slakes, Brisbane Flying Handicap and other races.

A DOMINION RECORD Lou Rosa's time, in the Auckland Racing Club Handicap, 2min 30secs, was a New Zealand record lor the mile and a liall', ranking with that of Argentic four years ago. OLD SOLDIERS NEVER DIE The veteran Erination, now in his fourteenth year, has once more been re-commissioned and will be prepared by S. Ban*, of Riccarton, for early winter stccplechasing. Unless the steeplechase ranks are an improvement on last season's candidates the Illumination representative is likely to again pay his way, for he can give points to* his opponents by virtue of long experience. NOTES ON ELLERSLIE FINE PERFORMANCES The Foxbridge—Lucy Rose representative, Lou Rosa, now in his fifth year, covered himself with glory at the meeting. In the Auckland Cup, in a big field, lie ran second to the great. Kindergarten. On New Year's Day he. prevailed over a good field in the Racing Club Handicap of one mile, and a half, and on Saturday last was victorious in the Clifford Stakes, one mile and a quarter. The stakes won by him amounted to £2100. Lou Rosa has a decidedly robust constitution, as shown by the fact that he improved with racing at the fixture. His next engagerment will be in the Wellington Cup to be run on Saturday.

KINSTEP MAKES GOOD Kinstep, trained at Hamilton by Frank Tutchen, scored, a well deserved victory in the Bowen, Handicap, and registered the fast time of lmin 11 l-ssecs, a track record. She is a five year old mare by Kincardine—Vane Steu, and should be heard of again. CONSISTENCY The two year old, Subadar, by Bulandshar—Rulette, won twice in his two Ellerslie starts. He. was well tested in both engagements, and came through with a full degree of courage. He is raced by his breeder. Mr A. J. McGovern, of Te. Awamutu and is trained by R. S. Bagby. EXPANSE MAKES GOOD Mr W. S. Goosman's Bulandshar —Expense colt, Expanse, a winner at the Te Rapa winter meeting, ran very gamely in the Royal Stakes. In the run home he was momentarily headed by Meermint, but came again under pressure to win by a neck. He is a big framed colt that will be benefited by time. KAITERE MAATI Kaitere Maati a winner at the Waikato meeting in November, and also at Stratford on Boxing Day, is standing up to his work well, for he scored decisively in the first division of the Grey Handicap, defeating a strong field. He is a three year old by Mr Standfast, from Princess March, so is bred on. winning lines. A SMART GALLOPER Tweedsmuir, by Mr Standfast —■ Fox Dancer, winner of the second division of. the Grey Handicap, is a three year old owned by Mr L. R. Nelson and trained by P. E. Pope at Takanini. He is qui be a speedy galloper, and should be a payable proposition for the balance of the season. RECORD INVESTMENTS The totalisator turnover at the meeting was £517,922 10s ,a record for the Dominion that will take a lot of beating, and an increase of £177,C2S over last year.
