BUILDING STANDARDS AT OHOPE

THE chance observation of a visitor from Wellington over the holidays, relative to the possible defacement of Ohope's pleasing appearance by the erection of all types of unsightly baches, is worthy of a little more than mere passing interest. There can be no doubt but that the beach is destined to become in the future one of the most popular resorts in the North Island. Much of its potential appearance as a beauty spoti depends upon the manner of its growth and development, now. If eyesore buildings are permitted to be erected, if shelters, shacks 'and garaged ar« allowed to become the general rule then the beach which is already recognised as a resort of surpassingbeauty will be spoilt for all time. More rigidity is required regarding the type of buildings which are being erected, greater control of the methods of construction are needed so that only substantial attractive houses are built. The natural standards of the beach should be maintained by the pleasing agreement of the buildings erected against its cliff banks. If any type of structure is to be tolerated we can feel confident that the beautiful beach environs of today will be unrecognisable to-morrow.
