HOME GUARD DANCE
GYMKHANA AWARDS PRESENTED LARGE CROWD ATTENDS Ihe dance held in the Winter Show Hall in connection with the Mounted Troops Gymkhana, last Monday evening attracted a large attendance, and provided, a fitting wind-up to the popular sports event of the day. Music for the dancing was: provided by the Gaiety Boys Orchestra which supplied modern and oldtimetime numbers in a finished and capable manner. Prior to a delightful supper served by the Ladies Committee, the M.C. Mr T'afl'y -Atkinson, announced that the presentation of the prizes Avon during the day would be made by Col. J., H. Herrokl, Home Guard Group Commander. The winners in turn came forward and were heartily congratulated. Capt. W. Rowan, of the Mounted Troop, Avho is chairman of the Gymkhana Committee, then took the opportunity of thanking the public of the Whakatane district for the splendid patronage they had accorded the eA'ent, in spite of, the bro'ken jiature of the Aveather. He paid special tribute to* the progress of the Boys Band, Avhich he said had assisted very materially towards the success of the day. He thanked the Pipe Band also for its services., and mentioned, the splendid Avork of the ladies Avho had assisted in the running of the canteen and refreshment booths. Captain Rowan concluded by expressing his appreciation for Col. Herrold's attendance and. of thanking his committee and steAvards. for the capable manner in which they had carried out their various duties. A feature' of the evening Avas the draAA'ing of the Canteen of Cutlery competition, which AA - as Avon by Mrs M. Cummings of Matata Avith the ticket No. 2389.
