ENGINEERING DEGREES

AUCKLAND UNIVERSITY

STATUS

SUPPORT FROM WHAKATANE

Writing the Wliakatane Borough Council at its meeting last Monday evening Messrs W. A. Gray (Co nculting Engineer), A. D. Mead (Engineer Auckland City Council) and. G. B. Bell (Consulting Engineer) stated that another effort was now being made to influence the -Senate of the Universitj* of New Zealand to grant the Auckland School of Engineering the same status as the Engineering School in Christeluirch. At the present time all students desirous of obtaining their Bachelor of Engineering Degree must take their final year's training at the Canterbury School, notwithstanding the i'ae.t that facilities for thafi training exists at the Auckland School. To go to Cliristchurch, involved an ' expense of £200 a j'ear and this means that many deserving and able young men could not ob-t tain their University Engineering Degree. The acute shortage of trained professional engineers revealed by 'the demands of Avar wor'k proved that this countiT needs two schools of full status. The Council was appealed to to pass a resolution supporting the claim for full status of the Auckland School of Engineering. The Auckland City Council, Harbour Board, Electric Power Boards and other Power Boards in the Province had already supported the proposal. On the motion of Crs Gaisley and ('aiming the Council decided to support the suggestion. The same subject was also favour-* ably discussed by the Whakatane County Council at its last meeting when it was decided that the Registrar, University of New Zealand, Wellington, be advised that the Council whole heartcdly supported the proposal for the establishment at full status, of the Auckland School of Engineering. ■' - V
