WASTE MATERIALS

URGENCY FOR COLLECTION

ORGANISING OFFICER REQUIRE!)

No secret was made of the fact, at last Monday evening's meeting of the Borough Council that the only thing holding ■up the collection of waste material in Whiakatane, was the absence of a suitable officer who "would be willing to undertake the organisation, of the local -drive. The work, said' the Mayor, required someone with the time to institute the collection of waste materials from given -points of the Borough from time to time. All other details had been arranged and there would be plenty of helpers. 'Mr J. W. Collins representing the ."National Waste Council, who recently visited Whakatanc had interviewed the Borough officers with a view to launching the campaign, reported the Clerk. Since then a central depot had been found for the depositing and sorting of waste paper and -arrangements had been : made with the Paper Mills to take -over suitable stock at £4 per ton. ift Thcre is quite a lot of waste paper which could be collected, in Whakatane," added the Miayor, "and it only remains- for an organiser to be appointed to obtain considerable revenue for the Patriotic Fund. There have been ample promises of assistance to undertake the sorting and collection. It merely wants some one with the time to do the .job, and up till the present we have been unable toi find such a person." The Deputy-Mayor, Cr Shapley, opined that there . should be some • one in the Borough willing to'un •dertake" the work. The Mayor: We've tried to 11 nd them, but there are none offering. Cr Sullivan enquired the position <of Avaste rubber in the Borough! The Mayor replied that Mr Collins knew nothing of that aspect apart from the fact that garages had J)een requested to store it. Cr Good: "If its not utilised .-soon; it won't be* of any use at all. Its deteriorating every day. There is such a quantity of it that most of it is outside in the open and is simply rotting aVay." The Council decided to give publicity through the press to the position regarding the need for an organiser and to make every effort in the meanwhile to enlist the services of a suitable person.
