FUEL OFFENCES
FAILURE TO KEEP RECORDS
NUKUHOU RESIDENT FINED Alfred Wm. Ruff, contractor of Nukuhou, laced the Whakatane Courh last Tuesday on a variety of charges relating to his failure to keep proper records of his petrol sales between July 1 and the end of that month. To all charges he pleaded guilty. The first charge related to the purchase of ten gallons of oil fuel beyond the coverage of. his license, the second that he sold without authority 2 gallons whilst the third and fourth related to Ijis failure to keep and maintain correct records. Sergeant Farrell said that the defendant was a contractor, in a fairly large way, operating a fleets of lorries. He had admitted the receipt of a greater quantity of petrol than -lie was entitled to but had refused io divulge from where he obtained it. The sale of the two gallons had been made to a farmer who had : undertaken the cartage of some cream to the factory, when defendant's truck had broken down. The subsequent charges related to a period when defendant's bookkeeper left on holidays and when he merely kept, notebook entries intending to complete the proper forms when his employee returned. After hearing all the evidence the Magistrate (Mr E. E. Walton) fix-* ed a fine of £5 and costs 28s on the first charge, dismissed the second', and imposed fines of £2 and costs Ms on each of the subsequent, two.
