HOW MANY MILES TO MOSCOW ?
How many miles to Moscow? The sun is bright o'erhead, And gaily into battle the boastful 'Aryans tread; Eastward 'and ever eastward they force their armoured way, And who their speed shall slacken and who their steel shall stay? How many miles to Moscn-w? And still the tall tower's stand— The battlements of Freedom, the buhvailks of the land. Round them in stout resistance the banded burghers Avait, A million fearless citizenss to guard their western gate. How many miles to Moscow? Still pile 1 the German dead, Still wrestle in the throbbing sky •the dark planes overhead; And now it is not mile by mile but foot by weary foot While dangles on the distant tree the fair forbidden fruit. How many miles to Moscow? That, road Napoleon knew, Who came in guise of conqueror,, then wavered and withdrew, Whose worn and tattered army retrod the trampled snow Along the miles from Moscow—long, bitter miles to go.
flow many miles to Moscow? How many, who can say? And who can count the sleeping dead that line the fateful way? Remember, Adolf Hitler, e'en though you batter through, There broke his lieart on Moscow a greater man than you!
