The Theatres

REGENT

"Pimpernel Smith'" marks the realisation of a life's ambition of Britain's great, stage and screen star, Mr Leslie Howard. Since this grand actor stepped into the front rank of»film favourites as "The Scarlet Pimpernel," a British production, he has cherished the idea to produce, direct and star in a British motion picture that would win world plause and bring added prestige to the Mother country film-pro-ducing nation. Mr Howard's perfoi> mances in "Pymalion" and "Gone With the Wind" brought princely offers from Hollywood, but with a firm conviction that his rightful place was home in England at this time of her greatest need, he reused them all. the opportunity he had so long and eagerly awaited, British National planned to make a modern "Pimpernel" story" on a most ambitious scale and Mr Howard, the'original screen "Pimpernel," was chosen as producer, director and star. Thus "Pimpernel Smith'* went into production despite seemingly insurmountable difficulties of modern warfare, in defiance of Nazi air blitzkriegs, the dangers of which were emphasised with terrifying realism when three bombs actually fell on the studios during production.
