Greene, of Hastings, has Just" itaken in hand a full brother to Low it Bay.i INCREASED PRIZE MONEY The Waikato Racing Club has issued an attractive programme for its spring meeting on October 21. The stakes in the Waikato Cup will be £850 as against £700 last year, while the sprint event, now of seven furlongs, has been increased by £50 to £500. LACK OF CLASS It has been authoritatively stated this season there is a definite scarcity of class gallopers in Australia, and the absence from the high- | grade ranks of High Caste, Beau Vite, Beaulivre, Kindergarten and Battledress is being deplored b3 r sporting circles generally. AN AUCKLAND PURCHASE Willie Wood, the big dividend payer at the Canlerbury National meeting has been purchased by Mr J. D. Simpson, of Auckland, and will be trained by Ivan Tucker.. HIGH STAKES The stakes for the Canterbury | Jocikey Club's ,two days New Zea- | land Cup'meeting total £10,800. The | prize money in the New Zealand Cup will be the same as last year, but that for the Stewards' Handicap will be increased by £50. A CASUALTY An Australian rider, R. Sweetman, was struck It a clod of earth in the Port Philip Handicap. The impact split 'the pupil of an eye and after receiving attention in the casualty room he came out two races loiter to win the Williamstown Steeplechase on Dorset, a horse trained by himself. CENSORED After the running of the Avondale Cup an inquiry was held by the committee into the running of the favourite, Centrepoise. It was agreed there had been no breach of the rules of racing, but the rider, G, Cameron, was censored for not riding to instructions. STAYERS AND SPRINTERS In the matter of the ability of some horses to compete succesfully in big distance events a Palmerston North racing enthusiast has referred to ;the fact that in 1894 Vogengang won the Wellington Cup and Telegraph Handicap at Ilutt Parle on I the same afternoon. In the Cup he carried 7.10 and was then jjenalised 71bs for the six furlongs. In both races lie was ridden by the premier horseman of the time, R. Dcrrett.
