RACING NOTES
STILL THEY SOAR The totalisator turnover at the Avondale fixture was £96,561, an increase of £39,177 OA'er last, year's figures. CHANGE OF LOCATION Mr S. J. Brindlc, of Matamata, has lately purchased a broad acres property at Morrinsville, to which his horses,, including the sire Ballater, have been transferred. MERITORIOUS The Nightmarch—Praise colt. Representative, raced by Mr W. S. Goosman, M.P.,,and trained by Fred Smith at Takanini, scored quite a meritorious victory in the Avondale Guineas. In the finishing run when Bert Ellis on Bonny Pay challenged him he held 011 gamely to win by a narrow margin. He is built on bigger lines than the runner-up, which enabled him to see out the mile even in heavy going. WINNING STRAIN Charivari, winner of the first division of the Trial Stakes, was a hot favourite, parity as the result of convincing track work, and also on account of being bracketed with Merrj- May and Torbay. She is a four old marc by Bulandsliar from the Absurd mare Charlady. Judging by the way she won Charivari should be heard of again in the near future. A RETURN TO FORM In the settlement of the Kingsland Hurdles at the Avondale meeting, Hessketoon revelled in the heavy going. He went up to the-leaders six furlongs from home and from that point always looked a winner. The Musketoon gelding is apparently improving with age, and, during the course of the spring meetings may further add to his winning account. At one stage of his career Hessketoon was sold for £30. THAT BUMP The Hawke's Bay owned Centre- | poise, by Hunting Song—Monettc, 1 winner of the Wellington Parliamentary Handicap in July,, was made a very firm favourite for the Avondale Cup. After traversing about two furlongs lie sustained a bump, and it must have been a pretty J forceful one, as before lie could again become balanced, the race was nearly over. The Auokling Spring Meeting is listed for October 10, and (if he stays, north he may make amends. CONSISTENCY Ftylitc, winner of the Hurdles at the Pakuranga fixture, ran up to his form by finishing second to Hessketoon in the Kingsland Hurdles, thus showing his consistency. EXPERIENCE Lord. Lucn, winner of a Pioneer Handicap division, had a fortnight previously finished in front of a two year old parade field at the Pakuranga fixture, and his experience probably served him in good stead. He is a chestnut gelding by Cambria Park—Carmelia, by Bronze Eagle from Pebble Beacli, by Potoa from imported Pebble 11. WILL I>o BETTER Although Nizam only finished third in the Avondale l Guineas, the full brother to High Caste may be expected to do better very soon. In point of condition he is not quite as forward as some of the opposition but. as the saying is "He might not be long."
