The second day's sitting of "the Overseas Appeal Board to the No. 2 Military District took place last Thursday in the Whakatane Courthouse when sai further list of twenty-six cases were dealt with and in the main were granted sine die adjournments. The Rangitaiki Dairy Company ■•■entered a joint appeal for reservists Reginald- Percy Shaw (butter factory assistant), Thomas George Roberts (welder and mechanic) and Arthur Raymond Burgess (electrician). The Secretary-Manager, Mr R. E. -Blair, said that the factory produced 5001) tons of butter normally and •had 700 suppliers. In practically every avenue of operation, it had jiow become self supporting, owing to the growing difficulty of having the work done by outside tradesmen. ,The company had. been particularly 'hard hit owing to the number of men called to the forces and would Jiave the utmost difficulty in replacing. The Whakatane Paper Mills appealed . likewise for six of its employees Joseph Henry Reading (tractor mechanic and caretaker), Colin JVlajor (foreman), Alfred Garrard Larsen (foreman), Brian Henry Flet•cher (cutterman), George Marldand (electrician) and Joseph Edward Oodd (grinderman).

Mr E. B. Brown, manager of the mills saicl that the prevailing labour shortage had made his company's - task doubly hard owing to the preclusion of women taking the place ■of men due to the nature of the work. The mill was turning out some 280 tons of board per week working a 24-hour day seven days a week. All the men were doing vital work and in the case of Dodd, reservist was already a volunteer for the R. N. Z. A. F. Adjourned sine die in all instances. Walter Stanley Learning (Mr Otley) said, he was a farmer of Edgecumbc, farming an area of 33 acres which was carrying 34 cows. Last year he had taken from the property 55001bs of butterfat and he ex.pected greatly increased returns this •year. Adjourned sine die. George David McFarland farm manager (Mr B. S. Barry) for whom Mrs M. S. Josephs appealed was described as a man watching the interests of 300 acres and minting 160 -cows, which yielded 39,0Gf01bs of fat." There were three hands available for milking operations including reservist's w r ife. Adjourned sine Messrs Percy Fenton's Sawmillers ■(Mr Barry) appealed on behalf of David Beattie Mear. It was claim»ed that the mill was working full •time on Government cuttings, the -whole of the output being devoted to defence worlt. Adjourned sine die. In the case of reservist, Frank B. Missen. sharemilker, Mrs E. A. Keir -appealed claiming that the area involved was a farm of 228 acres •carrying (JO dairy cows which had ;produced 19,0001bs of fat. Adjourn*ed sine die. A review of the appeal of George Pearse Kitchener, was sought by his father who said that 124 cows were milked on the properly yielding 30,OOOdbs of fa.t. Reservist and a Maori Iboy were all the hands available for milking.. Adjourned sine die. For Thomas T. S. Potter his em-] ployer, Mir L. Freeman appealed, Stating that the reservist was one of his two remaining truck drivers :from an original fleet of five. One -of his remaining trucks had also been commandeered for constructional work on an aerodrome. Appellant said, that he himself was unable to do woife since a serious accident some time ago. Adjourned sine die. Mr T.. H. Rawson appealed for Ik the retention of his son on his farm of 150 acres. The reservist-'John Kerr Rawson (Mr T. E. Hamerton) it was stated milked 120* cows producing 25,0001bs of fat. He had two brothers serving overseas and an elder brother a returned soldier from the last war. Adjourned sine -die. The New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency (Whakatane) appealed for reservist Jack Randle Ridtlell, produce salesman (Mr Otley). / Mr L. W. together with all fanners requirements of seed,, manures etc. In addition he supervised the handling ol on the company's behalf. The company did not as a rule appeal for its men. to be exempted though 38 had gone from the Bay of Plenty; but was now forced to in view of the acute labour shortage.

Edwin H. G. Stubbs, farm manager, was appealed for by Messrs Roberts and Roberts (Mr Buddie) who said the area of the farm was 1275 acres carrying 710 head, (including stud sheep) and 58 dairy cows. Reservist was manager of J. G. Cliff-McCulloch*s farm. Adjourned sine die. „ The appeal of H. I>. Paterson (Mr Buddie) for reservist William Teesdale was heard on affidavit, in view ofappellant's indisposition. Reservist was described as a roundsman, in the only milk supply serving Wliakatane. There were 500 clients and, 180 gallons were delivered daily. Adjourned sine die. Herbert Leslie Wallen, farmer said he farmed 90 acres, upon which w T ere milked 43 cows, producing 13 r ooo4bs. There was no one else employed on the farm. Adjourned sine die. .Ivan Maskell Withy appealed for .review, his holding Ixiing 708 acres of flat country and o()0 acres of hill and. 72 acres of maize. Cows numbering 160, produced .T7,fl;)2!bs of fat. Temporary help had been secured recently but coukl not be regarded as permanent. Adjjourned. sine die.

W. J. Murray appealed on behalf of Walter Stuart Woods, farmer of Otakiri, who' was described as being responsible for half of 290 acres upon which 110 cows were milked producing 28,4701bs of fat. Reservist had been employed for 14 years and had one assistant. Adjourned sine die.

Ivan Brecko Zidich was appealed for by J. J. Colebrook (Mr Otley) who stated that reservist farmed 112 acres milked 70 cows and produced 19,0001 bs of fat. last season. Adjourned sine die.

Kenneth Arthur Needham (Mr Barry) master painter, appealed for extension till February 1943 in order to complete his present contracts and urgent Government work, before going into camp. He stated that he had been absent recently upon important camouflage work and had still to paint 15 State houses in Whakatane. He had a staff of !two tradesmen and one labourer. Adjourned sine die.

Mrs Sarah Frankland, of Taneatua, appealed for her son, D. V. Frankland of Tancatua who was, she said the only man left on her farm of 150 acres. Adjourned sijne die.
