CARE OF DISABLED MEN

A SUGGESTION which will meet with warm public endorsement was made by Mr A. J. Canning at the meeting of the local' Farewell Committee la,st week. Speaking to the query as to whether the committee should carry on its practice or go into recess, Mr Canning said he considered that it should not only continue to operate but should also be prepared to enlarge its scope. He referred particularly to the disabled men who were coming home and whom he contended were in danger of being just as neglected as were the veterans of the last war. The committee he considered should Institute itself, even after the cessation of hostilities as a permanent body devoted to the welfare of maimed, disabled and nervous cases, which as everybody knew, despite official promises, were usually given very unsympathetic treatment, once the glamour of their home coming died off. Mr Canning's suggestion will be taken up at the forthcoming meeting of the committee and whether or not this organisation decides to actually make itself responsible for such men, it is to be hoped that the good seed sown will result in some such group being formed in Whakatane which will see to it that the local war victims in any case will not be neglected.
