NO ROYALTIES
FAMOUS GARAND RIFLE
PATRIOTIC CONTRIBUTION
The inventor of the semi-auto-matic Garand rifle, new standard infantry weapon of the United States Army, receives no royalty payments for the millions of these small arms now in the hands of American
troops..
John C. Garand, an arsenal employee. developed the first model of this rapid-firing rifle of revolutionary design in 1934.. He was offered a large sum for the- patent by a U.S. armament manufacturer and by the Government of Poland. But. he refused to sell when he learned the American Army was interested, and later gave the design to his own Government as an outright patriotic contribution.
Tlie Garand rifle almost doubles the firing power of an infantryman. Recently its performance in the fighting against the Japanese in the Philippines received high praise in an official report from General Douglas MacArtliur. Commenting on this report, Mr Garand said that while the famous Aveapon had earned no royalties to him, it had given him "a lot ol ! pleasure."
