SINE DIE ADJOURNMENTS GRANTED The No. 2 Military District -Appeal Board sat in Whakatane last Wednesday and Thursday when a substantial list of appeals lodged by and on behalf of reservists was reviewed. Mr S. L. Patterson, S.M., presided and associated with him were Messrs S. Manning and R. Coulter. Ronald Herbert King, farmer .of 'Otakiri, stated that he farmed an •area of 171 acres, and, milked. 41 dairy cows from Avhich Avas produced 10>,0001bs fat during the- past, season. It was impossible for him to get any labour to replace him. Adjourned sine die. Alfred John Hughes, builder, for Whom the Native Department, Taneatua, appealed Avas stated to be a standing volunteer for the R.N.Z.A.F. The department emphasised reservist's useful Avork in the construction of farm buildings, coav.sheds etc. Messrs Brabant Bros, applied for two of their drivers, Messrs Owen Bridger and F. H. Bcnseman, both ■of Avhom it. Avas claimed Avere engaged in the cartage of petrol lior •Oil Companies, and also GoA'ernment services in the Boy. Adjourned sine die, pro Added reserA'ists continued to serve in the Lines of Communication, Home Guard. An appeal Avas lodged by J. B, '(.low (Estate) Mr Steele, in the intercuts of a reservist sharemilker, Mauricc F. Brashicr Avho Avas engaged on a farm of 1-19 acres Avhich supported 90/100 cows and produced 17,9581bs of fat. Adjourned sine dieMr T. Ilamerton appeared for Hector Charles Brown, jvho farmed an area of 70 acres carrying 32 cows ■at Taneat.ua. He Avas engaged, single handed in bringing portion of it into production. Adjourned sine die.
For Leonard Joseph Grose and Cyril James Buckrcll, the firm of Messrs Boon Sullivan ami Luke appealed, Mr L.. Luke supplying evidence. l!t was slaved that the former was employed as a body builder and it he latter as foreman. Both men •would "be practically impossible to replace and the company had already 35 employees serving in the forces. The firm was well behind already in its building commitments having lost a further three experienced men who were commandeered l'or Government building purposes. Adjourned sine die.
Allen Carlyle Bunn for whom Mr B. S. Barry appealed was described as a farmer with a trading of 82 acres and mil'king 63 dairy cows. He had been farming all his life and managed the farm with the assistance of his wife. Adjourned sine die. i
Wm. Campbell (Mr Barry) who 'farmed. 69 acres and milked 42 dairy cows from which herd was taken last year some 12,0001bs fat was also granted a sine die adjournment.
William Clement Davies (Mr 013ey) of Taneatun, was described by liis father as being absolutely indispensible to him in the management ■of his own (reservists) farm and the ten properties also held by the family comprising 1176 acres and .upon which were milked 950 cows. Reservist's brother was already a prisoner of war in Germany, having left with an early echelon. Adjourned sine die.
Douglas Gordon Hawkins (Mr Bari'3') hairdresser and tobacconist, of Edgecumbe, stated that his was the only business of its kind in that area and he had made efforts to dispose of it but had been unsuccessful. Appeal dismissed, reservist being required to enter camp by November 1. Arthur Thos Hayward (Mr Hamerton) said he farmed 73 acres, upon which were milked 30 cows which last year produced. OOOOlbs fat. He had four children and. knew of no competent person to take his place. Adjourned sine die.
The father of two reservists, Eldred Dunstan, appealed on behalf of hL's two sons, J. W .and J.j ( A. Dunstan both of Taneatua. Both men it was claimed farmed 340 acres and milked 08 and 50 cows respectively. Adjourned sine die.
James Foote appealed for a review of the case of Alexander Robert Foote farmhand of Whakatane who assisted his: father to manage a farm carrying 45 cows. Already it w r as stated reservist had three brothers serving overseas and. an- j

Appellant and his brother took over the management of their father's farm in 1940 owing to the lattcr's ill-health. The area supported 110 cows and last year produced, 3.'3,00Q1bs faj:. Adjourned sine die. A. Iv. Day appealed for Edward Clifton Parsons (Mr R. F. Smith), appellant describing himself as physically unfit to serve in the Home Guard owing to an arm injury. The pair milked 130 cows with the casual assistance of a Maori who could not be relied upon. Adjourned sine die. A Waimana sharemilker, Wilfred Leslie James Kelsen (Mr Hamerton) was appealed for by J. D. Ward law and the Director of National Service. Reservist's father in evidence said 170 cows were milked producing 34,9971bs fat last year. Reservist's employer had himself been mobilised for constructional work. Adjourned sine die.
Mrs D. G. Fisher appealed, for Walter A. G. Hyland (Mr Buddie), a sharcmilker of the Whakatane district. Appellant was in charge of 85 cows with only a youth to assist, who would soon be eligible for military service. Adjourned sine die.
Deen Burgoync-Thomas sharemilker, was appealed for by his employer, Mrs M. Simpson of Matata, who stated, that 40 cows were milked which last year produced 55701bs of fat. Adjourned sine die.
John Bealty Skene of Manawahe, said lie farmed, 100 acres carrying 32 coavs and produced 50001 bs of butteri'at. The farm was a one-man farm. Adjourned sine die.
