CARROT CHAMPIONSHIP

FERTILITY OF PLAINS

MONSTER WEIGHS 1 ()>.;> LBS

In the absence of the usual Winter Show, it has been found possible to institute an unofficial, friendly competition

amongst growers of root crops on the Rangitaiki Plains. Two weeks ago Mr J. Cannell staggered local consumers by producing a monster weighing 8 l 2 lbs. The challenge was taken up and laslt week Mr A. G. Tebbutt of Taneatua, tottered into the Beacon Office with another field variety specimen (Matchless White) weighing 91bs and measuring nearly 3 feet.

The palm was only in his hands for a short lime for the old champion returned to the barrier with yet another of the same breed weighing This new exhibit holds the ashes at present but is still open to challenge from any part of the Plains or adjoining district.

In passing it is worthy of note that carrot juice is now being recognised as one of the finest and richest body stimulants which can be given to men of the fighting forces. The American arm}'' has concentrated upon it as a tonic for members of the Air Force, it having certain qualities which make for keener and quicker-registering eyesight. From that country too has grown the carrot juice bars, which are fast gaining popularity in this country. The roots are placed into an extractor which draws off 'the juice after pulping and is served to the customers at so much a glass.

In Auckland we understand that this innovation has already started and is gaining widespread popularity in health calcs where the carrot liquid is sold at 9d per glass.
