WASTE OF WATER
SCENES NEAR WHAKATANE
WEST
TRIP ROUXI) COUNTY
A trip round the countryside affected by the storm last Friday disclosed the widespread nature of the flooding. At Ruatoki all the low-ly-ing land was submerged including some of the richest dairy flats. Prompt action by the stock owners presented any serious losses, while practically all dwelling p'aces were above the water level. The area around Whakatane West was one huge lake, hundreds of acres in extent and banking back to the Taneatua highway which was also under 3 feet of water for half n mile. The Hoav of water across the Whakatane West Slaiion Road has caused a fairly extensive washout*. Surface-water lay about everywhere on the plains, forming ponds and lakelets in every depression and hollow. This was particularly apparent at Edgecumbe and Te Teko where the whole district seeme:l vo be completely waterlogged. An incongruous incident at Te Teko was the sight of a Maori woman performing her washing in the thick swollen Avaters*of the river, apparently completely oblivious to the fact that the water that lapped her bare feet had but to rise another few inches to overwhelm her humble abode, a yards off.
