THE GOLD BUG

Sir, —It is quite likely that Mr Nash's criticism of Briton's war effort (Herald 22/8/42) may have been caused through exuberance of spirit; being the representative of our Government and its fiscal policy in America, America with its buried gold in the vault's of the Kentucky hills. The Toronto Daily Star of Sept-em-ber 17, 1940, said: Addressing the American Bar Association, Dr James declared that the gold question must be considered as a problem of social and political philosophy rather than one of pure monetary theory. If you believe in democratic capitalism and some kind of world economic order the gold policy of, the United States is the most construct tive. On January 21, 1942, there appeared in the Canadian Press an account of the scheme to be submitted to the Rio Conference which included: Creation of a free Enterrrational exchange currency on a gold basis. This was the policy of Montague Norman in 1923 which, reduced the British people to poverty and distress. Perhaps Mr Nash would like the leg of the golden calf for New Zealand after the war. Is this why gold mining has been declared an essential industry and the West Coast valileys and flats of the South Island are being destroyed beyond repair? It is time we took heed lest worse befall us. Yours etc., W. BRADSHAW.
