Horses in Emergency "■What happens to your horses in an emergency?" asked an Englishr man who was in Timaru a few days ago. He Avas informed that no provision had been made for them, and he then pointed out that in an emergency the 'animals might bccome frightened, and if they carcered about the streets might cause injuries or death. He remarked, that in England drivers of horse vehicles were obliged to keep a rope handy, and when an emergency occurred they had to unharness the horses and tether them so as to prevent, them from careering about the streets. He thought similar action should be taken in this country. American Child Prodigy Seemingly fantastic, claims are put forward in a British newspaper concerning the amazing mental capac-! ity of a 10 year old, American boy. The child, whose parents are both lawyers, is said to have been speaking complete and grammatical sentences at the age of four months, reading books at 12 months, and playing the piano by ear at fifteen months. He composed music at the age of six years, and matriculated when he was nine. It is claimed that the boy is taking a chemistry degree in the company of students who are twice and three times his age, and that he is capable of discussing chemical formulae, anatomy, and higher mathematics intelligently with learned professors.
