BROADCASTING
SUGGESTIONS FOR ECONOMY
Broadcasting methods and programmes recently engaged the attention of he Auckland Farmers' Union Executive, and it was decided to forward the following resolution to the Minister.
"That as a war-time economy measure the 1 Government be urged to overhaul and arrange the programmes of the National and Commercial radio stations, and eliminate much of the non-essential programmes, such as. the 'Work for Victory' programmes, with a view to reducing the number of stations on the air and conserving electricity and diverting man-power to essential industries. Also, that the Government review the publication 'N.Z. Listener,' which could be reduced to a programme of events, and thus meet the paper shortage on an equal footing with non-State publications. Overhead control to be reduced to a minimum and commercial stations financed within themselves." In his reply the Minister stated that the reorganisation of the broadcasting services for the purpose of releasing technicians for more important war work was already in hand. The ''Listener" had no special privileges in regarding to obtaining newsprint, and had been reduced from 06 to :i'2 pages. A resolution was carried "That the broadcasting services should follow the example of the BBC in eliminating all '.slush' from their programmes."
