RACING

APPRENTICE'S MOUNTS N. Holland, the diminutive apprentice attached to O. Cox's stable at Hawcra, has been engaged to ride Transmitter and Transcend in their Palturanga engagements at Ellerslie. He will be in the care of 11. EVa. HAS THE ABILITY The novice jumper Lady Ex is in first-rate condition to begin the new season. She will do the bulk of her racing this spring over hurdles. Judged by the way this mare is shaping in her schooling tasks, success in the new department looks assure (I for her, MAY DO BETTER Since being recommissioned, Odtaa has had no fast work, and he is still carrying some surplus condition. During the past term the- form of this gelding failed-io reach the standard expected. However, he is a capable galloper who may soon make amends when the ground- becomes firm. RAN A GOOD RACE Although he did not get in the mone3 r , the Bronze Eagle gelding Bronze Royal ran a solid race in the Stewards' Hack No. 2 at Pacroa, and he can be ticked off as a likely winner of a minor event in the near future. P. Mcllroy had'him broking well for so early in the season, and he will be right at his best from now on. ALWAYS IN THE FIRING LINE Radiant Vaals was always prominent in the President's Handicap at Paeroa, and early took up the running with Young Paddon. At the straight Radiant Vaals shook Young Paddon off, but had no sooner done so than Airport, on which Hooton had been sitting patiently in third place, dashed through and quickly settled W. Townscnd's gelding. INACCURACIES ON BOARD The posting of withdrawals on the scratching board outside the secretary's office at Paeroa on Saturday contained several inaccuracies. For a considerable time both Cherry's Ticket and Aero King were posted as scratcliings from the Parawai Handicap, but actually these horses took their places in the field, Aero King finishing second. IN THE LAST STRIDE The speedy Nccnah did not look a winner of the Parawai Handicap 100 yards from the judge, but in the last bit he flashed up to beat Aero King and scored a nose victory. The four year old son of Foxbridge is a very smart customer, but he did not jump out as well as usual,, and his finishing effort was all the more attractive. Neenali is niccly treated in the Admiralty Handicap at the Pakuranga meeting with only 91b above the minimum, and in his present form he will be difficult to dispose of'. SADDLED TWO WINNERS Mrs E. M. Sloane and J* W. Cathro shared the honours among the successful trainers at the Thames meeting, each saddling two winners. Mrs Sloane was responsible for Gold Spot and Airport, and Cathro for Joy Musk and Neenah. Joy Musk returned a fine double-figure dividend and was well ridden by that versatile horseman M. Coon. BEAU VITE PROGRESSING Frank McGrath, trainer of Beau Vite, stated recently that the horse was progressing avcll in hi.s spring preparation. McGjrath docs not anticipate a return of the muscular soreness that affected Beau Vi'te early in his training last spring and In the autumn. HIS FIFTH ATTEMPT Erinati oil's second In the Grand National marked his. fifth effort to win this important event. Now 13 years old, Erination is not likely to .improve, but lie is a good jumper and a sound '.stayer and weight-car-rier. This was his cecond time as runner-np. He finished second to Padishah in 10r.9.
