COLLISION WITH COW
TRUCK J>RI,VER CHARGED
! Before Mr E. L. Walton. S.M., in; the Opotiki Magistrate's Court Donald Carter, a truck driver (Mr Hodgson) was charged with having collided with a cow■ on the main highway he wantonly failed to stop to ascertain the injuries suffered by the animal. I Defendant pleaded not guilty. j Sergeant J. Isbister stated that defendant was driving a trtick at j Waiotahi. through a mob of stock, j and alter hitting a cow drove on toj Taneatua. O'n the return trip lie alleged that defendant did not stop.! Three days latei' the cow was foflnd by Sergeant lisbisfer, and its broken leg was a gruesome sight. The boiX 1 was sticking into the ground every time the animal moved', and the hoof was dangling behind'. Tutu Kurangi, drover, in evidence stated that lie was driving a mob of cattle. At the time of tlic accident ; he was having lunch by the side of the road. The driver of the truck told him that he had banged into one of the' cows on the road, and defendant stayed with the other men while witness went back to examine the cow. He found the cow I lame. I The Magistrate said that the charge , was one of failing to stop, whereas ' the evidence showed that defendant did in fact stop. It was quite clear , that defendant was not guilty of the ;offence with which-he' was charged land dismissed the charge.
