cmi;ating a sunn.us
Discussing the financial position, Mr W. R. Boon, chairman of the Whakatane Harbour Board, last Friday said that it was most satisfactory It was estimated that the year would be completed with some £2000 in the bank to tfje Board's cred'it. It would be wise to keep this sum intact and to create a still greater surplus which could be utilised after the war when there would be a great, need for employment among the 100,000 men who would be demobilised. Local bodies would be called upon to meet the situation and if each! of them had a nest egg put by, for just such an emergency, it would go a long way to meet the position. Mr Tickncr said lie was in the fullest agreement. Money saved for spending in lean times would go twice as far as in good times. Ho quoted the work on the Harbour groynes which were completed during the slump and which he maintained had cost probably a £1000 less than had they been, done in boom times. .Tlie wharfage dues for June and July were reported-by the secretary as under: — June July 1940 £201 19-10 £272 1941 £2(50 1911 £293 1912 £190 1912 £221
