COLOURFUL GRAND' MARCH
AH roads led to the Winter Show Hall last Friday evening when the "All Nations" Gala , .dance staged by the Whakatane ■ Caledonian Society attracted ' some 500 gay young dancers and provided one of the brightest spectacles seen in; Whakatane siince the outbreak of the war. - The event Avas a signal success . =and the proceeds which will be shared with the Patriotic Committee : should be fairly substantial. From '8.30 p.m. onwards the floor was ' thronged and a happy feature Avas the number of dancers who attended in natlional costume and which weire shown off to good effect 1 |'n ' the grand march at 10.30. Led by tlie- Pipe-Rand tlie long line of nierry-mafrers Avound round the hall revealing all manner of dresses. ' Dutch girls were, there, rubbing ' shoulders with Mexicans, Colleens, Scottish lassies and South Sea ls- \ landers. The hall which had been ' decorated \A r ith flags and greenery • made, a fitting setting for the sicene. Music for the dancing Avas sup-*-plied by the popular Rhythm Aces •orchestra AA'ho Avere heard to full adA'antage l from a raised dafisi in the • centre of the hall. Though a good percentage of those present were •school children the evening was enjoyed to the full by young and old. *The Pipe Band under Pipe-Major H. D. Paterson, supplied music for several of the dances and were in ikeen demand. The M.C.'s aa t ci - c ■f Messrs T. Atkinson and A. Ferguson . 4 The 1 supper arrangements were in the capable hands of Nurse Craig with the usual band of Avilling helpers who comprise the Society's Social Committee. The interval occupied no less than ii\"e sittings, during Avhich extras AA'cre played by Mr Colin Wallace and "Miss Fowler. The Monte Carlo Avaltzes which -created a good diversion Averc won by Miss Ruby Howat ami Mr W. Dixon and Mr Aberhcart and part-' V ner. During the evening the 1 Chief of the Socfiety, Mr W. J. Simons, took the opportunity of thanking all those present for their patronage and expressing the hope that there would be 1 other occasions on which * the Society could assist forward any local deserving cause.
