Wiiat ho, what ho, ma hearties. I nearly had to> hale out last Wed-t nesday night. It was the heaviest rain 1 have experienced for ages, and the stone root right above my bed sprang a leak. When I woke up I was soaking and there was a pool in the middle of the Iloor ,in which Peterkin the Penguin was diving his head and waggling his sleek little body. The dirty brat! I've fixed it up now with a bit of pitch and putty but I'm not at all satisfied with the job. Well heaven preserve me from another night like that one. It was worse than a ship in a gale, as far as the wetting I received. The weather is calmer now but I. don't trust it! Not l'rcm the quarter its coming from. By the way did you notice the big steam cloud White Island had over it on Wednesday. It was one of the biggest I've seen. Now I wonder if that had any connection with the 'quakes down near Wellington. I could quite understand it it' it did. At any rate I sincerely hope that we won't get any ell'ccts of it up here, though they tell me that White Island is the safety-valve for the Bay of Plenty and it is only when it gets blocked that we can look out for squalls.
