PATRIOTIC FUNDS
REACHING DISTRICT QUOTA STILL REQUIRED Roughly the Whakatane Borough and County Inter-zone Patriotic Committee has still to find a third of its allocation money of £10,481, for the 1942 appeal. The sum outstanding is £3,627, indicating that 65 per cent is now in hand and that we still have the best part of five months in which to find it. Compared with Gpotild's effort where 85 per cent has been collected and only £868 remains outstanding Whaltatane's position is nothing to be proud of, though included in its quota is the sum of £223, which represents this inter-zones .proportion of collections made b\ the Provincial Council of the NaPatriotic Fund Board. This fact should indicate' to subscribers to such funds as radio appeals that it would assist their local cause to a far greater extent by donating their money direct to the distiict secretaries. Those, districts which have already fulfilled their quotas should ignore the current radio appeals. The position as far as the zone districts are concerned is now as i-under: — . Sub- ° llt " scrib- standod -nr i £9° £327 Matata Manawahc ' Thornton '' ♦Otakiri -To Teko•' «'» Ruatahuna Te Whaiti 166 'Edgccumbe 892 ' i • # t7i 4b7 •Awaken ,5/i 'Ngatiawa Maoris 98 -Opouriao and _ Tancatda 1100 (overpaid o/-) _ . , . «jq 494 Ruatoki Wainui '' Borough & Ohope 1342 Galatea 118 Waimana 101 £6606 £38/4 From the foregoing it will be seen that Taneatua and Opouriao are the only sub-districts which have found their quota. Otakiri and ie Teko have practically done isame thing and deserve the highes "tpraise, while Thornton, Wainui and Itfanawahe are well on the way. Edgecumbe has also made a good effort as has Waimana. The Whakatane Borough and Ohope has still some £963 to find though it has to be borne in mVhul that it is well past the' half way mark having to its credit £1342. The smaller country districts: are perhaps more markedly behind, and Awakeri with a gap of £467 is something of a surprise. Matata shows a definite lag with less than a quarter of its total quota, 'while the Ngatiawa Maoris are slightly worse. In regard to, the balance of the Ruatoki quota of £494 12s Bd, the Ruatoki residents have made arrangements with the Native Department to deduct such amount from their bonus dairy cheques. By this method the whole of their quota is practically assured and may be -deducted from the district's total of what has yet to be' found.
