"THE HUMBLE SWINE"
PRODUCTION WANTED A NATIONAL CALL Nece-sily for much greater produclion of pig meats in order to supply (Ic:!"onc,:' forces was stressed by Mr 11. A. Candy, chairman of the Waikato Primary Production Council, in an address to representatives of tlie local Farmers' Union Branch Bobby Calf Pools and Factory Committees, held at Te Arolia ■West Factory recently.
The swing back from clieese to butter would en-able greater numbers of pigs. to be fattened, and if \\ould be an important activity of Production Councils to see that .sufficient grain, particularly barley, was grown for pig feed.
The speaker said they realised certain difficulties would have to be overcome in increasfng the numbers of pigs. Since the early period of the war, when everyone bad been urged to go in for them, there had been something of a slump and great numbers of sows-, which should have been kept for breeding, had been slaughtered. Pigs, howeve-I*, were the most prolific of all farm stock, and he urged all who could do try and get a sow or two 1 in order to start, off. If this was done now there would be porkers for next autumn. A question as to whether benzine would be made available for carting whey for pigs was asked, and j\lr Candy thought the answer to this would lie in how much benzine and ! wear of tyres for how much whey. He was certain that some allowance would be made.
